TOWN UNDER-18 1 LEEDS UNITED 2

Posted on: Sat 13 Oct 2007

Two Leeds United set-pieces proved to be the difference between the two sides at Storthes Hall this morning as a resilient Town side lost only their third FA Premier Academy League game of the season.

Despite the visitors having the large majority of possession in the opening 45 minutes, the young Terriers took the lead a minute after the interval when a good low ball into the box from Daniel Broadbent forced an own goal. However, Leeds took full advantage of a second-half free-kick and a penalty to win the game, despite playing with just ten men for around 25 minutes.

Manager Graham Mitchell opted for a 4-3-3 formation to start the game but a side made up predominantly of first-year scholars struggled to get hold of the ball against a physical United eleven. Leeds tested on-loan goalkeeper Aaron Jameson in the Town goal after just five minutes, but the Sheffield Wednesday custodian was equal to the near-post effort from striker Sam Jerome.

At times, it felt like the intensity of the local derby - played in front of a very healthy crowd at the Town training ground - panicked the young Town side, as possession was squandered on a few occasions when perhaps the players didn't want to take any undue risks. However, despite their possession, Leeds only created one clear chance through their lively number 8, who lifted a clever left-footed ball to the back post where the tall Leeds number 9 should have kept his header down from just 6 yards out.

In truth, Town defended very well throughout the half with all the team working tremendously hard. The battle in midfield had been very physical and Mitchell made a change at half-time to try and combat this, bringing on the battling Luke Williams for Lewis Nightingale.

Town then took the lead a minute into the half; a great ball down the left channel from Spencer Harris released Daniel Broadbent into space. The former England schoolboy international switched the ball to his favoured right foot on the dead-ball line before whipping in a low ball towards the near post, where a Leeds defender deflected the ball into his own net.

Despite the setback, Leeds continued to see most of the ball and equalised after 55 minutes. A free-kick from 25 yards out left Jameson with no chance as it flew into the top-left corner, but the initial problem had been caused by a Leeds striker positioning himself in the Town wall and creating a gap for the ball to fly through.

Leigh Franks tried to drive Town forward again soon after and his fantastic low ball across the Leeds box just evaded Jack Hunt at the back post. However, the former Bridlington centre-back gave away a controversial penalty five minutes later when he was adjudged to have climbed on a Leeds player when heading away a corner at the near post. The Leeds penalty taker sent Jameson the wrong way, recording his second goal of the afternoon in the process.

The penalty came shortly after Leeds had been reduced to ten men; their number seven having been shown a straight red for a challenge on Stephen Brook in midfield that the referee deemed as dangerous.

This numerical advantage, combined with a clever tactical switch to 3-5-2 from Graham Mitchell, allowed Town to use the width more and get good possession. Tom Jackson and substitute Luke Durham were being utilized to good effect at wing-back to create space for the central midfielders Collinson, Williams and Brook to operate in and the chances started to come Town's way.

First, Stephen Brook got his head to a Dave Pickering cross ahead of the United goalkeeper but a slight touch from the custodian saw the ball go wide of goal. Striker Danny Barlow looked lively after being introduced with twenty minutes remaining and his clever ball to the far post following a Town corner saw Broadbent loop a header over the bar in what was the clearest Huddersfield chance of the game. Barlow had a late shot from the edge of the box himself, but Town could not force an equaliser and Leeds took the points.

All in all, Mitchell could be happy with the spirit and battling qualities that his side showed throughout the game, with the difference between the two being the physicality of the older Leeds scholars.
