TOWN UNDER-18 4 WEST BROM 1
Graham Mitchell's under-18 side recorded their biggest win of the FA Premier Academy League so far with a resounding 4-1 win over visitors West Bromwich Albion at Storthes Hall on Saturday.
The goals came courtesy of a Luke Durham brace, with single strikes from Danny Barlow (pictured) and substitute Daniel Broadbent as Town continued their excellent start to the 2007/08 season.
Mitchell decided to leave out most of the personnel who had featured for John Dungworth's Reserve side during the midweek defeat at Nottingham Forest, with only Alex Smithies and Daniel Codman starting the game and Lewis Nightingale, Daniel Broadbent, Tom Jackson, Spencer Harris and Dave Pickering all left on the bench. Defender Shane Killock was once again on first-team duty and Oliver Templeton is still recovering from his long-term knee problem.
Custodian Alex Smithies made his FA Premier Academy League bow this season, having returned from the under-17 World Cup the previous weekend and fresh from Reserve team duty during midweek, and he was protected by a back four of (from left to right) Liam Ridehalgh, Daniel Codman, Leigh Franks and Jack Hunt. In front of the defence, Mitchell decided on a midfield three consisting of Luke Williams, Lewis Collinson and Curtis Roberts with Luke Durham and Stephen Brook flanking the central Danny Barlow in attack.
It didn't take Town long to take the lead in what was an impressive first-half performance, Luke Durham opening the scoring after just 10 minutes. A long ball out of defence dropped in behind the WBA left-back who was outpaced by the speedy Durham. Luke did brilliantly to come out on top in a 50-50 with the goalkeeper, rounding the West Brom custodian before hitting the ball into the roof of the net from an acute angle.
Five minutes later, both Luke Durham and Town had their second of the game. The young winger headed home a deep Curtis Roberts corner at the far post to extend the Terriers' lead.
Striker Danny Barlow made it 3-0 after 25 minutes following good work from left-back Liam Ridehalgh. He ran quite a distance down the Town left before crossing to the near post, where Barlow had done well to get in front of his marker before volleying home.
The game looked dead at half-time with Town three goals to the good, but substitute Daniel Broadbent scored a fourth having been on the pitch for less than two minutes. The speedy striker, on for fellow striker Barlow, outpaced a West Brom centre-half following a good ball over the top by Stephen Brook before calmly lobbing the ball over the advancing goalkeeper.
West Brom had a lot of possession in the second-half and scored a consolation after 60 minutes, a striker following up after Smithies had done well to tip a free-kick onto the post, but Town defended very well and the game finished 4-1.
