The under-18s extended their unbeaten start to the season a week yesterday afternoon after overcoming their Lancastrian visitors at Storthes Hall thanks to a single Stephen Brook goal.

This win means that the Academy team has won two and drawn one in their opening three games of the FA Premier Academy League season.

With 'keeper Alex Smithies traveling back from the under-17 World Cup in North Korea following England's exit at the quarter final stage, Sheffield Wednesday 'keeper Aaron Jameson played the final game of his emergency loan and helped Town out with a third clean sheet in a row.

In front of Aaron, Town lined up 4-4-2 with a back four of Dave Pickering, Spencer Harris, Daniel Codman and Tom Jackson. Curtis Roberts, Luke Williams, Lewis Nightingale and Stephen Brook made up the midfield with Daniel Broadbent and Dave Heagney up front.

The game was an even affair on the whole and the first goal looked like it would be crucial. Thankfully, it came for Town on the half-hour mark through a piece of individual brilliance by Stephen Brook. The Town left winger intercepted a sloppy Rovers' pass just to the left of the centre-circle before setting off on a very positive run at the heart of the opposition defence. 'Brooky' beat one player before knocking the ball past the centre-back and rounding him, finishing off the move by lifting the ball over the advancing goalkeeper and into the empty net.

Daniel Broadbent had Town's other real chance of the game in the second-half, hitting a brilliant shot from 20 yards that the Blackburn custodian did well to save. Rovers had a couple of half-chances that Jameson dealt with well but Brook's goal proved to be the difference after 90 minutes.

Under-18 manager Graham Mitchell was understandably pleased with the win.

"The game was quite even and I always felt that the first goal would be the winner, which it proved to be. All in all, I feel that 1-0 was a fair result and I'm happy that we've continued our unbeaten record.

"At Academy level, the level of performance takes precedence over the result but it's a good sign that we are winning consistently as we are changing the team around to give everybody time on the pitch. Every player understands what we are asking of them at the moment and it's all going well."

Mitchell was without striker Chris Pert and midfielder Lewis Collinson for this game through hip injuries and defender Leigh Franks also missed out with a bruised foot. Oliver Templeton's long-term knee injury still sees him on the sidelines but he is improving rapidly and Shane Killock was rested given that he traveled with the first-team to the Johnstone's Paint Trophy defeat at Grimsby Town.

The next under-18 game takes place on the morning of the Cheltenham Town game - September 15th - when Town host West Bromwich Albion at Storthes Hall in a midday kick-off and it is hoped that Smithies, Collinson, Franks and Killock will all be available.
