Academy goalkeeper Alex Smithies will be returning to English soil shortly after England under-17s were knocked out of the World Cup in North Korea due to a 4-1 defeat to Germany in the quarter finals.

Alex played all 90 minutes of the game - his fifth cap during the tournament - and was blameless for all of the German goals according to the report on the FA website.

Despite the disappointing end to the tournament, the World Cup has been a successful one for Alex. He came into the tournament as second choice behind Middlesbrough 'keeper Jason Steele, but an illness to the Boro shot-stopper gave Alex his chance and he has not looked back since.

Highlights of the tournament for Alex were a top-class save in the opening game against North Korea that was likened to Gordon Banks' famous one against Pele and a penalty save that helped England to a 2-1 win over Brazil in the group stages.
