WOLVES 0 TOWN UNDER-18 1
The Town under-18 side opened their FA Premier Academy League account with a win at Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday.
A single 37th minute goal from in-form striker Daniel Broadbent (pictured) was enough to seal the win for the young Terriers in what was an impressive all-round performance.
With Alex Smithies on under-17 World Cup duty with England, Town borrowed 2nd year scholar Aaron Jameson from Sheffield Wednesday and he lined up in goal for Graham Mitchell's side. He was protected by a back four of Dave Pickering, Stephen Brook, Leigh Franks and Spencer Harris and ahead of them Mitchell opted for three in midfield; Luke Williams, Curtis Roberts and Lewis Nightingale. Up front, Luke Durham and Tom Jackson flanked the more central Broadbent.
As well as Smithies, Town were missing several of the older personnel. First-year scholar was on international duty with the Ireland under-17 squad but 2nd-year defenders Shane Killock and Daniel Codman were both rested ahead of the Reserve game at Shrewsbury Town on Monday as they are both expected to start. Jack Hunt missed out through a hamstring injury and Oliver Templeton is still recovering from his long-term knee problem.
The home side, generally fielding an older side than Town, looked very strong at the back throughout and had the most of the early possession without ever looking to hurt Town. After 20 minutes had passed, Mitchell's side started to get a foothold in the game and launching attacks of their own.
One good move in particular led to the only goal of the game in the 37th minute. Good build-up in midfield featured a clever one-two between midfielder Luke Williams and striker Daniel Broadbent, with the latter releasing the pacy striker in on goal. Broadbent advanced roughly 15 yards to the edge of the Wolves box before coolly sliding the ball into the corner past the despairing goalkeeper.
Town had a couple of chances to extend their lead in the second-half but it turned out that Broadbent's goal was enough to get the three points.
Under-18 boss Mitchell was delighted with the performance of his young side.
"I'm very pleased today; we had a young team out, but they've all coped very well with it.
"We played some very nice football and we thoroughly deserved the result. I thought that our defence did very well and it was important that we shielded the 'keeper considering he was new to us, although he dealt with what he had to do very competently."
The next under-18 game takes place on Saturday, when we host Watford at Storthes Hall in an 11am kick-off.
