The annual pre-season trip to Gerry Murphy's homeland of Ireland has been a great success for the under-18 side, with two wins against good local opposition in what was a 'thoroughly worthwhile trip' according to the Academy boss.

On top of the on-field victories, Murphy told htafc.com that the trip was helpful in many other ways.

"The facilities over here are excellent, which is why we keep coming back year after year", said Town's Director of Football Development.

"It seemed to us that the trip was more relevant than ever this year, as we have 12 first-year scholars this season and living together in Dublin is a much better way of bonding as a team than simply training together in Huddersfield would be.

"Getting all the players out of their normal environment also helps the coaching staff to bond with the lads, as well as helping us learn more about them as people."

Murphy always stresses that results are not the ultimate goal at this level and he was more pleased with the way in which the lads had played their football in the two games, as well as the application during training.

"The football has been fantastic while we have been over here and every single player has worked very hard. We got here on Monday and trained at 4pm, at which point the heavens opened; despite this, the lads applied themselves brilliantly and I'm really pleased."

The Academy return to English soil this evening and can be very happy with themselves after a 2-1 win over University College Dublin on Tuesday was quickly followed up by 5-3 victory over Bray Wanderers last night.

UCD 1 Huddersfield Town 2

An impressive win at the Bellfield ground for Town, who used 'keeper Alex Smithies absence due to England World Cup duty to field a trialist custodian in the form of Belvedere's Craig Sexton. The under-18s took a 2-0 lead after a first-half goal from Dave Heagney was followed up by a 70th minute Luke Williams goal and an 86th UCD goal was only a consolation.

Manager Graham Mitchell deployed a young side in a 4-3-3 formation for this game and made several changes throughout in order to get all his players vital match fitness ahead of the new FA Premier Academy League campaign.

Bray Wanderers 3 Huddersfield Town 5

A change to 3-5-2 heralded a high-scoring affair at the Carlisle Ground last night, with a flurry of second-half goals putting the result beyond doubt. It was 2-1 to the hosts at half-time despite an early Luke Nightingale strike, but goals from Curtis Roberts and a brace from the in-form striker Daniel Broadbent gave Town another win, supplemented by a late Luke Durham goal.
