Wagner: It was a perfect day
David Wagner was a happy man after his side’s 2-0 victory at Blackburn on Saturday.The German, who celebrated his tenth victory in charge of Huddersfield Town, celebrated with the away fans at the end of the game.
Wagner commented:
“I think we all together; the supporters, the lads and I; can be very happy today I think. We totally deserved this result. They had fighting attitude and they worked together. It wasn't an easy game, but after the first five or ten minutes I think we were very good and in pole position. We keep the ball and we were able to keep them away from our goal; sometimes we tried to create some chances and of course Nahki had a good nose when he smelt what maybe could happen and he scored. I think we only had some problems after 60 to 65 minutes where they had a couple of chances but all in all I think we totally deserved this win.
“I'm very happy with this performance and the result as well.
“We used our experience today. If you are two-nil up then you don’t always have to go for the third goal. If you don't have the really big opportunities then you have to keep the ball and I think we did it well. We have the players who are able to keep the ball if we have a little bit of space and if we are confident enough and I think today we were very confident, especially after we scored the second goal. It was a great performance from No 1 to No 14 so I am very happy and very pleased with what we showed today.
“We played well against Hull where we put in a good performance and we confirmed this today, and today we got a clean sheet. It was a long time since we got a clean sheet and this was one of our targets before the game, so all in all it was a perfect day and the beginning of hopefully a perfect week, so we try to recover tomorrow morning so that we are afresh as we can be on Tuesday.
“From my position it seemed to be a penalty at the end, but it is the referee’s decision – if you win the game and it wasn’t a penalty, I think we can accept this decision.
“We have not spoken about who scored the second goal, we will see on the TV who scored. After Nahki’s reaction it may have been an own goal, but I’m not sure. He will have other games and other chances to score.”
Wagner made a point of making sure that the players went over to celebrate with the away fans at the end.
“First of all, we have to thank our supporters for the support and I think it’s important that when we work together, when we win together, that we celebrate together. This is something I think the squad deserve to celebrate together with the supporters and on the other side, the supporters deserve that we thank them and for the support they gave us today – the away support was great.“
Town’s next game is on Tuesday night at Rotherham, and Wagner was looking forwards to the game.
“It will be great to see the away stand full again at Rotherham and we are hopeful of putting on a similar result on Tuesday for our fans.”
