Cranie: Wolves deserved their win

After a positive start to Saturday’s early kick-off at Molineux, Martin Cranie cut a disappointed figure after the 3-0 reversal at the hands of Wolves.
The Terriers went into the fixture on the back of two wins and a draw – the side’s best form of the season – but were deservedly beaten by the hosts, despite a promising opening 20 minutes.
“We built a bit of momentum in the last three games and we’d been playing well,” Martin told htafc.com post-match.
“I thought we started well at Wolves to be fair, but the first goal sort of killed us. It was just like against Forest – probably exactly the same time that we conceded as well. We seem to be doing that a lot.
“It’s hard to put your finger on why. When we start the game like that, we have to score. We all know that we have to get the first goal when we’re on top in a game, but at the minute we’re conceding and playing catch-up for the rest of the half.
“Going in at half time 1-0 down, we said we would come out and try to be bright in the second half but they got the next goal and it killed the game.
“We knew the next goal would be crucial after half time. If we got it, we knew we would be right back in it and we felt we could go on and win, but they got it. That made us really push for a goal and led to us conceding the third, but it was pretty much ‘game over’ by then anyway.
“I don’t think it was a 3-0 game when you look back on it. We had a few chances and although they were maybe not clear cut ones, we still could have got a goal. However, it ended up 3-0 and we just have to move on now.”
The Terriers now have a long time to wait to get back into competitive action, with the international break meaning the next Sky Bet Championship game is at Ipswich Town on 17 October.
Cranie continued: “You can look at the international break either way, but this probably gives us a chance to pull ourselves together ahead of the next game. If you win, you always want to be playing straight away to keep that momentum, but maybe this is a good thing. We’ll look at the game early in the week and then put it to bed.”
The Ipswich game is the first of three in eight days; it’s quickly followed by home games against MK Dons (20 October) and Derby County (24 October).
“Everyone in the team has Championship experience and knows there will be breaks in the season. That means you also get periods where the games come thick and fast, but everyone will be prepared for that and it won’t be a problem. We just have to make sure we’re ready,” Martin explained.
“There are no easy games in the Championship, so we’ll just take each one as it comes. We’ll prepare as well as we can and hopefully pick up some points.”
The defender feels that getting more points on the board would be more than the team deserves after the start to the season:
“In most of the games this season I think we’ve played well and I feel like we should have more points on the board than we do at the minute. Wolves deserved to win that game on overall chances and everything else.”
