Under-18s win first game of pre-season

- Jack Boyle nets twice in first Under-18 friendly
- Young Terriers beat Wigan Athletic at PPG Canalside
- Reaction to the game from Tony Carss

Huddersfield Town’s Under-18 side played its first game of the 2015/16 pre-season at PPG Canalside on Tuesday afternoon against visitors Wigan Athletic.

With several of the scholars involved in a behind closed doors Under-21 friendly at Newcastle United on Friday and set to be included in the squad for Friday’s Development Squad game at Radcliffe Borough, Professional Development Coach Tony Carss fielded a young line-up, incorporating two trialists.

The young Terriers won 2-1 on the day, taking a two goal lead through second year scholar Jack Boyle. The attacking midfielder picked up where he left off last season, scoring two great goals; the first courtesy of a driving dribble through the heart of Wigan’s defence before a neat finish into the bottom corner and the second a superb bending drive from the edge of the penalty area.

Carss explained he was satisfied with the first game for his side when speaking to htafc.com post-match:

“The lads have been working really hard over the last 10 days and this game has got some great minutes in their legs in a competitive 11 vs 11, plus we’ve had a look at two trialists.

“We looked strong; there were some good performances. The game has helped them get a feel for their game awareness and focus against a competitive Wigan side in readiness for the season.

“With a lot of our second years involved with the Under-21s – which is great – it gave the chance to our First Year scholars to get some Under-18 experience just 10 days into their scholarship.”

Town’s team:
Tadhg Ryan (Owen Brooke, 46); Harry Clibbens, Dylan Cogill, Jordan Williams, Callum Elliott (Jacob Hanson, 76); Sam Warde (Jamie Spencer, 46), Lewis O’Brien, Billy Holmes (trialist) (Adam Porritt, 46), Jack Boyle (Cedwyn Scott, 65); Adam Edgar (trialist) (Akeel Francis, 46), Cedwyn Scott (Rekeil Pyke, 46)
