SMITH SIGNS CONTRACT EXTENSION
29 April 2015
Defender Tommy Smith has signed a contract extension that will keep him at Huddersfield Town until the summer of 2018, with the Club having an option on a further year.
Smith, 23, who hails from Warrington, started his career in the Tranmere Rovers youth system before making the move to Manchester City in 2003. He turned professional there and featured for their Elite Development Squad but never made a senior appearance for City.
He subsequently joined the Terriers in August 2012 as part of the Club’s newly formed Under-21 squad, competing in the Premier League’s Professional Development League 2. He made 20 starts at for the Under-21s at a mixture of centre back and right back in Town’s debut season and appeared among the First Team substitutes in the January 2013 FA Cup win at Charlton Athletic.
He eventually made his league debut as a starter in the 2-1 Yorkshire derby win at Sheffield Wednesday live on Sky TV in November 2013; a season that ended with him making 26 starts.
Since then Tommy has been a virtual ever under Chris Powell; in total he has made 68 starts for the Club, with a further two substitute appearances.
His previous contract was due to run until the end of the 2015/16 season, with the Club having the option of a year’s extension.

Huddersfield Town Manager Chris Powell commented:
“Tommy has established himself as an important member of our First Team squad and a regular starter both at right back and also within a back three. He is still a relative novice in terms of professional experience in a tough division, but he has played a lot of Championship games in a short period of time since his debut, which is testament to his ability, fitness and development. Tommy deserves a lot of credit for that.
“The coaching staff and I have a lot of belief in Tommy, who should only continue to improve through experience, and this extended contract gives him a great platform to push on here.”
