It’s been a successful 2015/16 season so far at the Huddersfield Town Success Centre, which is now preparing for a busy Spring Term!
In the Autumn Term, the centre welcomed groups of 15 pupils from four local partner schools; Shepley First School, South Crosland Junior School, St Thomas Primary School and Thornhill Community Academy.
The participating pupils attended the centre on one afternoon per week for between six and 10 weeks to follow a well-structured learning programme of web-based learning activities and interactive team challenges.
The numeracy themes for the term were basic number operations such as times tables, division and percentages. The pupils sharpened these skills by completing nine challenges on the centre’s own Huddersfield Town branded interactive maths soccer skills software.
The main literacy theme was creative writing and the participants reflected on their tour of the stadium to write a professional review using creative language features such as metaphors, similes, idioms and interesting sentence starters.
The pupils also took part in a series of co-operative team games aimed at enhancing confidence, self-esteem, negotiation and problem solving skills.
Each session one group was rewarded with a ‘Team of the Week’ book prize for their achievements in this challenge.
The school staff that accompanied the pupils on their visits all agreed that those taking part had made great progress during their time at the centre. The Headteachers at each participating school were also pleased with the results of the pupils’ efforts; so much so that all four schools have committed to recruit another group of pupils to attend the centre in the coming term.
In the last session the pupils each received a certificate, a pair of match tickets and a goody bag from the Club in recognition of their efforts and achievements over the preceding weeks. Each and every pupil gave the centre a ‘thumbs up’ as a learning centre and all said that they enjoyed using Huddersfield Town as a focus for learning.
Huddersfield Town Success Centre is a schools and community focused educational centre jointly managed by Huddersfield Town and Kirklees Council and is based in the suite of classrooms in the Fantastic Media Stand.
