Young Terriers prevail in PL Cup

- Town Under-21s beat Southampton at St Mary’s Stadium
- Jack Senior and Danny Kane were the scorers for HTAFC
- Frankie Bunn’s side progress into last eight of Premier League Cup
 
Town’s Under-21s will face Charlton in the quarter finals of the Premier League Cup after beating last year's winners Southampton at St Mary’s Stadium.
 
Frankie Bunn’s side took the lead midway through the first half as Jack Senior netted from inside the box.
 
The young Terriers continued to dominate and doubled their lead in the second half. Senior, once again involved, chipped the ball across the box to Danny Kane, who headed home from two yards out.
 
After a very competitive first ten minutes, Town began to get a foothold on the game and created a good chance through Ronan Coughlan. Regan Booty played him through on goal but the defender blocked his shot.
 
More chances fell Town’s way, this time through Jake Charles. Philip Billing flicked on Coughlan’s corner but Charles’ shot was well saved by Saints ‘keeper Gazzaniga.
 
It took till the 21st minute for Town to take the lead. Jacob Hanson made a darting run into the Southampton box but was halted by the Saints defence. The ball fell to Jack Senior who smashed a right footed shot past Gazzaniga to put Town ahead.
 
Town’s dominance continued and they had two great chances to double their lead. The first fell to Duane Holmes. Jake Charles picked out Holmes inside the box but his shot rattled the bar.
 
Minutes later Holmes played Charles through on goal. The Wales Under-21 international rounded Gazzaniga but couldn’t hit the target.
 
As the first half came to an end, Southampton began to create more chances. The best fell to Gape, but his curling effort was well saved by ‘keeper Lloyd Allinson.
 
Southampton had the first chance of the second half. Mugabi met Reed’s corner but couldn’t direct his volley towards goal.
 
Bunn’s side began to dominate once again; Coughlan was placed through on goal but his shot was blocked by the defender.
 
After 61 minutes Town doubled their lead. A fantastic move from the young Terriers saw Jack Senior play a one-two with Flo Bojaj to break into the left side of the box. He chipped an excellent ball into the to Danny Kane, who headed home from two yards out.
 
Following Town’s second, Southampton began to create more chances. Ryan Seager smashed the side netting before Mugabi met a Reed corner, but spurned the chance.
 
Right-back Jacob Hanson continued to cause the Saints youngsters problems. Another direct run forced Gazzaniga into a good save.
 
Late drama saw Ryan Seager booked for diving after he fell going round an on-rushing Lloyd Allinson.
 
Town’s victory means a game at home to Charlton Athletic in the quarter finals of the Premier League Cup.
