REPORT: SHEFF WED 1-0 TOWN U21s

29 March 2016

Frankie Bunn’s young side defeated in South Yorkshire

- Town U21s lose at Sheffield Wednesday
- Kevin Wright scores game's only goal
- Highlights on HTTV on Wednesday

An early second half goal from a set-piece proved the undoing for a very young Huddersfield Town Under-21 side in a Professional Development League 2 North game at Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday morning.

Frankie Bunn’s starting line-up featured four Under-18 players and a further Under-16 player, with 16 year-old England Under-17 international Jordan Williams making his Under-21 debut at right back.

The team also included two trialists; goalkeeper Andy Firth, of Liverpool, made his second start for the Development Squad whilst Everton left back Spencer Myers made his U21 debut after two recent starts for Tony Carss’ Under-18 team.

Bunn’s side was without regulars Flo Bojaj (with the First Team), William Boyle (on loan at York City), Jake Charles (on Wales Under-21 duty), Jacob Hanson (hamstring) and Duane Holmes (calf).

The opening quarter of an hour was devoid of real chances, with Town’s Academy scholar Lewis O’Brien testing home goalkeeper Joe Wildsmith with a low drive.

Town’s Ireland Under-19 international Danny Kane – playing in midfield on the day – then should have opened the scoring, but placed a presentable chance wide of target.

The best effort of the half came from the Owls later on, with Ryan Croasdale sending a looping header onto the crossbar.

Wednesday then earned a penalty just minutes into the second 45 when a combination of O’Brien and Williams looked to bring a player down. However, trialist ‘keeper Firth excelled – saving George Hirst’s spot kick.

Unfortunately, the Owls scored from the resulting corner, with their own trialist Kevin Wright firing home from close range after the ball wasn’t properly cleared.

Wright curled another shot just off target for Wednesday soon after before home goalkeeper Wildsmith was called into action, saving substitute Jack Boyle’s excellent free-kick in superb fashion.

Hirst hit the post for the hosts following a late goalmouth scramble before Jack Senior poked wide at the other end.

Highlights of the game will appear on HTTV on Wednesday.
