Young Terriers defeat experienced hosts

Town’s Under-21 side recorded an impressive and comprehensive victory against a very experienced Rotherham United in the Final Third Development League this afternoon.

The competition, which has no age restrictions, saw the hosts play a number of First Team players including Scott Loach, Frazer Richardson, former Town man Joe Skarz, Richard Wood, Rob Milson, Ben Pringle, Richard Brindley, Jonson Clarke-Harris, Jordan Bowery and Paul Taylor.

On the flipside Frankie Bunn’s only overage player was defender Anthony Gerrard, with Town’s side consisting of the Development Squad players who have reached the quarter final stage of the Premier League Cup recently.

Former Aston Villa striker Bowery had a goal chalked offside within two minutes, but after that the Terriers took charge.

Jake Charles was the star on his first competitive start of the season; he’d missed the last five months with a combination of ankle and back injuries. Within four minutes he had opened his account, converting a ball in from Captain William Boyle after good build-up play from Norwegian midfielder Sondre Tronstad.

Charles netted a quick-fire second just 11 minutes into the game at Roundwood Pavilion after being put clear by strike partner Flo Bojaj.

Welsh Under-19 international Charles then turned provider with eight minutes of the half remaining, sending a corner into the area for centre back Joe Wright to covert.

This win now gives Bunn’s side seven points from a possible nine in the competition, supplementing a home win over Mansfield Town and an away draw at Doncaster Rovers.

The winner of Town’s northern group will progress to the knockout stages.

Town’s U21 team:
Ed Wilczynski; Joe Wright, Anthony Gerrard, Matt Crooks; William Boyle (c), Sondre Tronstad, Duane Holmes, Philip Billing, Ben Atkinson (Joe Wilkinson, 86); Jake Charles (Daniel Carr, 64), Flo Bojaj (Ben Holmes, 73)

Unused sub:
