The latest defeat came at the hands of Fulham as Town were beaten 3-1 – a game that Dixon feels Town should have got more from.

“We seemed to shoot ourselves in the foot, as I thought against Fulham we were the better team. We were playing the better football, creating more chances and we got ourselves back in to the game,” he told htafc.com.

“Before their goal we looked strong and like we could win the game, but we created our own problems by conceding straight after equalising.”

Dixon believes if the team can cut out those errors, they can return to winning ways in the derby clash against Sheffield Wednesday.

“I think we need to keep our concentration better and if we’re ahead we need to manage the game slightly better. It’s a fine margin, because the good play is there. We’re creating good chances and we’re working hard enough. It’s just individual errors and team errors we need to iron out.”

Looking at Saturday’s game, he added: “A derby is a unique game and they inevitably take care of themselves. Hopefully when the game settles down we can take the advantage. Last season at home we lost 2-0 and we’ll be looking to rectify that with a win.

“We’ve done well at home this season and fingers crossed we can carry that on in front of our home fans, with them backing us all the way.”

Dixon has faced stiff competition for the left back slot from loanee Jack Robinson this season – something that he relishes.

“We have healthy competition and teams get better when you’ve got players fighting for positions. From day one, the Manager has kept us in the loop; that’s what he does. He explains his decision whether I am playing or not playing and for me that is good management.

“I’ve had managers in the past who haven’t said anything to me. If you’re not told what is going on, ultimately you’re not going to be happy. It makes players realise that even if they don’t get a game, they are still part of the bigger picture. 

“I’ve really enjoyed working with the Manager, even though I’ve been out the team. Usually players that are out of the team don’t get on with the Manager, but like I say he’s been honest with me and kept me in the loop so I really respect him and enjoy working with him.”

Town could move up to 13th in the Sky Bet Championship table with a win tomorrow lunchtime and Dixon hopes the team can keep climbing up the table in the coming weeks, especially ahead of the busy Christmas schedule.

“Obviously we want to be as far up the table as possible and three points on Saturday will take us up to 13th ahead of the 3pm games. It would be a good feeling to move up to mid-table and hopefully we can push on going in to the Christmas period.

“I don’t think the table reflects our good play since the Manager has come in. I think if he’d been here since the start of the season and we’d played like we have been, we’d be higher up the table than we actually are. You could fairly say we’d be top half of the table.”
