Dempsey disappointed – but happy with first goal

It was a game of mixed emotions for Town midfielder Kyle Dempsey at Brentford on Saturday.
On one hand, the 20 year-old was disappointed that the Terriers gave themselves ‘a mountain to climb’ with a poor first half performance at Griffin Park that gave the hosts a 3-0 half time lead, but on the other he did manage to net his first goal for the Club as a second half sub.
Kyle explained: “It felt brilliant to score my first goal, but that kind of got killed off as the game had already gone at 4-1 down. It’s only worth a bit of personal pride, but I didn’t take it as an achievement in today’s game. Later, it will have been a massive thing for me to score my first goal in the Championship.
“I wrote a tweet after I missed a few chances against Rotherham – two good chances – saying that my time at Huddersfield wasn’t quite right yet, as I was missing chances that I shouldn’t.
“I promised myself I would put that right and (at Brentford) I got an opportunity, had a chance and put it away. To do that backs up what I said and hopefully proves what I am about.”
Just as Head Coach David Wagner said after the final whistle on Saturday, Kyle reinforced that self-belief was the reason behind the ‘chalk and cheese’ performances in each 45 minute period:
“I think we played the second half with no risk. We passed the ball and got back to how we want to play the game.
“When we play the way we want to, I think we can beat the best of teams. We won the second half 2-1 on Saturday, but it was that poor a first half that we gave ourselves a mountain to climb.
“We showed signs of how we can play in the second half and we have to take the positives from that.”
The summer signing from Carlisle United was also keen to stress that the side is a work in progress under the new Head Coach, who has taken charge of just six games so far:
“It might not all click together in the first month or two; this is a long process. Once we get to grips with it and can perform week in, week out, I think we will be up there.”
