“Of course it is a great moment for us and we are allowed to celebrate today. The squad did a really good job,” David told htafc.com post-match.

“It wasn’t easy for us today. Our opponent stood very deep and made things very tight, so it was not easy for us to find the right spaces. 

“To be honest, before the game we were not 100% sure what the opponent would do; whether they would try to attack us, play with the long ball or play on the pitch. We didn’t expect they would try to play so deep and offer us no spaces. 

“From the outside, it seemed like they were very happy with a draw and didn’t try to do something offensive in the game. They used that game-plan and we didn’t expect it. 

“In this moment you have to stay very patient in possession and take up good positions for reactive pressure, so if you lose the ball you can win it straight back. This was very good, but we were not able to create as many chances as we did in the past. 

“It is also perfect if you score from set pieces and we did it twice. This was the key moment in the game, because after that we got space and scored three more great goals. We are very happy.”

Given that the initial breakthrough came from a set piece, David was keen to share the praise with his technical staff.

“I think this is the biggest work of Mike Marsh, who works on the offensive ones and defensive ones with Nick Colgan. The biggest part of our great set pieces is Mike Marsh. 

“Nahki scored from exactly the position Mike told him to in our morning training. I’m very happy that he is a part of my staff and that his work was so successful today.”

Town had five different scorers on the evening, with a first goal in England for Jason Davidson and substitute Duane Holmes netting his first senior strike.

Wagner continued: “I’m very happy for Duane; he’s a very good talent. He has some great movements. In training he shows it much more often than in the games, but tonight he got his chance again and scored his first goal for the First Team; a great moment for him and for us. Hopefully this will increase his confidence.

“Another substitute scored and once again today, our bench was able to give us a positive influence. 

“We also had our full back and centre back score today, so it was a perfect day.”

The Head Coach also reserved special praise for one particular player:

“For me, the best player on the pitch today was Jonathan Hogg. What he did today and in the last week is unbelievable. I’m a great fan of Jonathan.”  

To finish, Wagner clarified why Emyr Huws was taken off early in the second 45 minutes:

“He had some problems with his power. This is natural as he has only trained for three days after his illness. Hopefully he will be fresh again for Saturday.”
