WAGNER: LET’S PERFORM LIKE WE CAN

Head Coach David Wagner wants his Huddersfield Town side to use its final opportunity of the season to beat one of the Sky Bet Championship’s top six sides when Hull City visits the John Smith’s Stadium on Saturday.

The Terriers have fallen short against fellow promotion contenders Sheffield Wednesday and Middlesbrough in the last two fixtures and Wagner wants his side to bring its best performance to the pitch against the Tigers this weekend.

“We have to perform to our highest level to beat the best teams and in the last two games we didn’t do this. We will try everything to do this on Saturday against Hull City; to show a reaction after the poor game that we delivered.

“We cannot make it as easy for them as we did for Middlesbrough. We didn’t perform like we are able to and we have to make that right on Saturday. On Tuesday, we underperformed in each position against a very strong team.

“Saturday is our last chance to beat one of the top six from the division and it is one we’d like to use. The lads were disappointed on Tuesday because this is not what we are able to bring on the pitch; it was more about the performance than the result.”

Steve Bruce’s Hull side has its own agenda to play for this weekend after a mixed run of recent form, but Wagner is only concerned about his own team.

“It seems to me that this is not the best part of Hull City’s at the moment, but as always the opponent is not the most important thing for me.

“We have to make sure we do our things right and perform better than we did on Tuesday; this is the most important thing for me. We have to think about what we did wrong, why we did it and what we had to change.

“We need to make sure that we perform like we normally do. We need better communication and a better balance against counter-attacks and to stick to our identity on the pitch. We will make sure we are totally focussed.

“It would be good if we score the first goal to build up our confidence in the game.”

David believes he will have the same set of players to choose from this weekend as he did in midweek, as he explained:

“Kyle Dempsey and Duane Holmes have been training since the beginning of the week.

“’Hoggy’ was back with us as well, but we have kept him out of training for the last few days and the next two; he will be back again at the beginning of next week.

“Joel Lynch and Harry Bunn were gym-based yesterday but will probably be back on the grass today. We’ve had a busy time and those two have played all the minutes, picking up small impacts on Tuesday. We will make a final decision on them after training.

“On Saturday, we will have nearly the same players available as we had on Tuesday. It is too soon for Kyle and Duane as we haven’t worked as hard as usual this week due to the recovery from the game in midweek. If everything goes well, they will be back next week after a full training week.”
