POWELL: WE GIFTED THEM THE GOALS

Chris discusses today’s defeat

- Manager believes side 'gifted Wolves the goals'

Huddersfield Town Manager Chris Powell gave his thoughts on the Club’s 3-0 loss at Wolverhampton Wanderers to htafc.com post-match.

“It certainly wasn’t a 3-0 match with what we had in the game, but we basically gifted them the goals – especially the second, when we gave away the ball in a key area. The third was a breakaway. Obviously they had one or two chances, but so did we.

“We started off very well, which we knew we needed to, and then they got a goal out of nothing. It’s tough to take, because we felt we could come here and do something. We’ve got results here before.

“We’re getting in the right areas in the final third, but we’re just not selecting the right pass or cross and we’ve found ourselves losing the game 3-0.

“We need more. We need to hold the ball better and make better decisions. Muzzy (Carayol) had a good battle with Dominic Iorfa, especially early on, and I felt that we were not delivering the type of final ball that our strikers or wide men want. In that respect, it wasn’t right where we want it to be.

“We were still bright on occasions and should have scored from a well-worked corner, but it wasn’t to be. To be fair Martinez made a decent couple of saves and Jamie Paterson could have scored with his first touch if it had fallen right for him. That would have certainly got us right back in the game.

“Ishmael had enough support with him and we got enough ball into him. However, we need more. We want to get Ishmael to where he was last year and at times he has shown that. However, we can’t lay blame at his feet; we certainly need a bit more from all the players.

“We can’t just have good passages of play with no penetration.

“I always have belief in my team and in my squad, but we have to be at our maximum to get something from games; that’s a fact of life in the Championship. We have to give ourselves a chance in every single game. We did that to an extent today, but clearly the end result is all that matters.

“In some respects you want to get straight back to it, but maybe we do need this break to take stock. Two or three lads will go on international duty, but we will prepare right for three games in eight days against Ipswich, MK Dons and Derby. They are all going to be huge games, but the two home games will be massive for us.

“We’re aspiring to be better than last year. We’ll always play our football as much as we can, as we did today. We quietened the crowd and were in the ascendancy, but we needed to keep that going.

“Jed and Elliott’s loans both end in the middle of next week, so we’ll be in discussions with Aston Villa and Bournemouth to see where things go. They’ve both done well for us, even though some of the results like today and Cardiff haven’t been great. They’ve added to the squad, shown us what they are about and helped us win the two games. Hopefully we can keep them here, but we’ll have to wait and see.”
