Development Squad defeated at PPG Canalside

Town’s Under-21 side met defeat at PPG Canalside on Monday afternoon, with a costly 10 second-half minutes seeing visitors Barnsley net three goals.

Barnsley started the game in decent fashion, having a goal ruled out for offside and another effort cleared off the line, before Town came into the ascendancy.

Joe Lolley - one of two overage players fielded by Frankie Bunn alongside Radoslaw Majewski – was at the fore, causing havoc when cutting in from the right flank and having several shots blocked by defenders or saved by away goalkeeper Adam Davies, whilst striker Daniel Carr also hit the post.

However, Barnsley took the initiative and put the game to bed thanks to a clinical 10 minute spell in the second period. First striker George Maris put his side again with a smart snapshot into the bottom corner from 20 yards out and then Town’s centre backs made a mess of a long goal-kick from Davies, allowing striker Nana Boakye-Yiadom to slot home from close range.

Barnsley’s third followed shortly afterwards. After a Town attack from a long throw broke down, their overage Captain Dale Jennings broke at pace down their left side – going past the outside of the covering Sondre Tronstad before expertly beating the helpless Allinson.

Town’s team:
Lloyd Allinson, Ben Holmes, William Boyle (c), Sondre Tronstad, Joe Wilkinson, Joe Wright, Duane Holmes, Philip Billing, Radoslaw Majewski (Flo Bojaj, 66), Daniel Carr, Joe Lolley

Unused subs:
Ed Wilczynski, Ben Atkinson, Liam Coogans, Adam Porritt
