MATCH PREVIEW: BARNSLEY

30 July 2015

A look ahead to Saturday’s all-Yorkshire clash

- Huddersfield Town’s First Team travels to take on Barnsley
- Final friendly before the start of the Sky Bet Championship season
- Butterfield, Hammill and Cranie return to Oakwell

Huddersfield Town will celebrate Yorkshire Day with a derby game at Barnsley on Saturday in what is the final First Team pre-season friendly ahead of the 2015/16 Sky Bet Championship season.

Town’s final friendly will see Jacob Butterfield, Adam Hammill and Martin Cranie all make returns to Oakwell to face their former side.

The game will complete Chris Powell’s preparations for the new 2015/16 Sky Bet Championship season as they get ready to face Hull City on Humberside on 8 August.

Town’s reigning Player of the Year Butterfield began his professional career at Barnsley, making his debut when he was 17. He went on to make over 150 appearances for the Club before moving to Norwich City in 2012.

Martin Cranie signed for Town this summer after leaving the Tykes. The defender spent three years at Oakwell and made over 100 appearances for them, while Adam Hammill spent two seasons at Barnsley before moving to Wolves in 2011.

Barnsley’s side was unbeaten in pre-season, defeating Stalybridge Celtic and Kilmarnock away from home alongside a draw with Guiseley, before a comprehensive 4-0 home defeat at the hands of Middlesbrough on Wednesday night.

Manager Lee Johnson will be hoping for a promotion push this season, in his first full year in charge. The Tykes finished 11th in Sky Bet League 1 last season as Johnson helped them finish in the top half of the table after taking over in February.

This summer has been a busy one for Barnsley as Lee Johnson looks to put his own stamp on his squad. Seven players have been brought in, while many have also departed.

One of the biggest transfers to date is the acquisition of Marley Watkin. The forward scored nine goals for Inverness last season, which included the opening goal in a 2-1 win over Falkirk in the Scottish Cup Final.

Johnson continued to add to his forward line by signing Conor Wilkinson from Bolton on loan till January. He has kept his trust in the forward, who he signed when he was in charge at Oldham at the start of last season.

The Tykes will also be relieved to see influential centre back Lewin Nyatanga signing a new two year deal. The Wales international made 51 appearances last season and scored five goals.

A player for Town fans to watch would be centre midfielder Conor Hourihane. He was Barnsley’s Player of the Year last season and ended top scorer with 14 goals.

Town fans will have good memories of the last time the Terriers faced Barnsley. Goals from Keith Southern, Danny Ward, Adam Hammill, Adam Clayton and Sean Scannell gave Town a 5-0 victory over the Yorkshire rivals.
