NAHKI: THIS COULD KICK-START OUR SEASON

13 August 2014

Hat-trick hero Wells on the win at Chesterfield

Nahki Wells believes that the 5-3 extra time win at Chesterfield in the Capital One Cup could kick-start Town’s season.

Speaking after the full-time whistle with his hat-trick ball tucked under his arm, the Bermudian explained how the players came back from two goals down twice to win the tie.

“I think everyone involved with the Club needed that, because it’s been a tough few days for us. It was important we represented the Club well tonight and show that we have the desire.

“Mark Lillis and the technical staff did well to galvanise us and help us come from behind; they showed us that the game wasn’t done. They brought on a few more attacking players – the changes were good and gave us more of a threat. Once we scored, our tails were up and our confidence was sky-high.”

Wells formed a new-look strike partnership with Jon Stead and was full of praise for his teammate.

“It was a new partnership, but a little similar to players I’ve previously played with. In my opinion Steady was the ‘Man of the Match’ tonight; he worked his socks off, linked play, won his fair share of headers and kept everything nice and simple. That helped to get me goal-scoring opportunities.

“It’s nice to get a hat-trick, but I’m actually not too pleased with my performance. That happens in football – you don’t play well and get a hat-trick, then on other days you play brilliantly and can’t score. This will help my confidence though – I think I needed that.”

Rather than focus on his own notable achievement on the night, Nahki was instead pleased for the team:

“I’m delighted to get off the mark with a hat-trick, but more importantly I think we deserved to go through. Hopefully this will kick-start our season. I know from experience that anything is possible in this competition, so hopefully we get a big team in the next round.

“We have the players here to compete in the Championship. We have a good, young team that has a bright future and we should move forward and continue to grow. That’s what attracted me here.”
