TOWN U21s 4 WEDNESDAY 1

10 September 2013

Carr and Cristian grab braces in dominant victory

Daniel Carr and Cristian Lopez continued their good form in front of goal as Steve Eyre’s U21s recorded their third victory of the season.

The strikers’ goals came after Franck Betra had given Wednesday an early lead at the John Smith’s Stadium.

The Owls’ frontmen did well to work a neat one two, but Town’s defence stood off them and allowed it to happen as Franck Betra raced past the covering Paul Dixon and slotted neatly under Lloyd Allinson.

The shock of falling behind kicked Steve Eyre’s men into gear as Daniel Carr went close twice from successive corners with ten minutes played.

Tommy Smith headed straight at Owls stopper Aaron Jameson before Duane Holmes played in an inviting cross which Town failed to convert as their supremacy in the match continued.

Matt Crooks and Paul Dixon failed to find the target with shots before the breakthrough eventually came. Holmes’ sliced volley fell at the feet of Carr who provided Cristian Lopez with a tap-in from three yards.

Wednesday were noticeably bigger than Town all over the pitch and caused Town problems from set-plays during the opening 45. In the 33rd minute Allinson displayed his agility to push wide Taylor McKenzie’s powerful header.

Keith Southern was playing his first game since injury in pre-season and was looking calm and composed in the centre of the park.

His composure was clearly having an effect on his teammates as they started the second half patiently before firing three goals in six minutes. Cristian doubled his own tally with another three yard tap-in after Carr had spun well in the box and hit the post.

Carr then grabbed the goals that his play had deserved with a quick fire double. His first was courtesy of great play between Crooks and Cristian and his second was thanks to a superb piece of individual play by Holmes who crossed for Carr to volley home.

Wednesday never recovered and it was Town who continued to look the more threatening as Dale Hopson forced Jameson into a fine save with a 25 yard volley.

Town’s team (4-4-2):

Lloyd Allinson; Paul Dixon, Murray Wallace, James Burke, Tom Smith; Dale Hopson, Matt Crooks, Keith Southern (Max Leonard, 66), Duane Holmes; Cristian Lopez (Paul Mullin, 75), Daniel Carr (Joe Wilkinson, 85)
