MURRAY MAKES SCOTTISH U21 DEBUT

14 August 2012

Defender plays full 90 against Belgium

Huddersfield Town defender Murray Wallace made his debut for the Scottish under-21 side on Tuesday night as they lost 1-0 in an international friendly against Belgium.

The Glasgow born, 19 year-old centre back played the full 90 minutes for Billy Stark’s team, following on closely from his first caps at under-20 level for his country during a summer tournament in Holland.

Wallace’s reputation will have been done no harm as he started for the Scots ahead of their upcoming UEFA Under-21 Championship qualifiers at home to Luxembourg and in Austria in early September.

Meanwhile Sean Scannell played the final ten minutes as a substitute during the Republic of Ireland’s under-21 UEFA Championship qualifier at home to Turkey, which finished 1-0 to the visitors in Sligo.

This was Sean’s 10th cap for the under-21s and was a key game as Noel King’s side try to qualify for the Championship Play-Offs. As per Murray and Scotland, the Irish have two important qualifiers coming up in September; away at Hungary and then Italy. The Irish are still in contention for a qualiftying place – competing with tonight’s opponents and Italy.

Both players will now return to Huddersfield ahead of Town’s big npower Championship opener at Cardiff City on Friday evening.
