Development Squad to play in cup competition
Huddersfield Town’s Development Squad will this season take part in the Final Third Development League Cup Competition alongside its involvement in the U21 Professional Development League 2.
However, unlike the Professional Development League, the Final Third Development League doesn’t have any age restrictions. Currently, Town can only field three overage players for its U21 Professional Development League 2 matches.
The cup competition features teams from all over the country who are split into Northern and Southern groups.
Huddersfield Town features in Group B of the Northern section along with Derby County, Doncaster Rovers, Mansfield Town and Rotherham United. 18 northern clubs are taking part across four groups; meanwhile 11 southern-based teams have entered across two groups.
Town’s fixtures are listed below:
Mansfield Town (H) PPG Canalside – Tuesday 7 October, 2014 (1pm)
Rotherham United (A) – Tuesday 13 January, 2015 (1pm)
Derby County (H) PPG Canalside – w/c 20 January, 2015 (1pm)
Doncaster Rovers (A) – date to be confirmed
The winners of Group B will qualify for the semi-finals.
Huddersfield Town Senior Professional Development Coach Frankie Bunn, said:
“We were looking at ways to increase the amount of games that the Development Squad plays over the course of the season and this new cup competition has filled that desire.
“We have some exciting young players at this football club and we have to ensure that we utilise different methods of competition to aid their development. With the competition element that comes through playing cup and tournament football will aid their development.
“There are also no age restrictions on the matches meaning that it will also provide those players on the periphery of the First Team squad an opportunity to play competitive football and gain match sharpness.”
