Two wins from four as Norwood fires past Burnley

Oliver Norwood’s long range strike against then table toppers Burnley at the John Smith’s Stadium concluded a month of progression for Huddersfield Town.

Town had started on the back foot with a narrow 2-1 defeat at Wigan and a disappointing 3-1 reversal at home to Birmingham City.

However, Adam Clayton and Martin Paterson put their differences behind them to inspire the Terriers to a victory at Sheffield Wednesday before Norwood and James Vaughan notched to earn a superb victory against inform Burnley.

It took a piece of Premier League quality from Manchester United youngster Nick Powell to send Town to defeat at the DW Stadium.

The attacker took advantage of a mistake from Peter Clarke to smash home the match winner early in the second half.

Leon Barnett had earlier given the home side the lead before Oliver Norwood replied on the stroke of half-time. Danny Ward and Norwood tested Wigan stopper Lee Nicholls before the final whistle, but Town lacked the positivity in attack of a week ago.

Kyle Bartley’s second half brace condemned Town to back to back defeats ahead of the international break.

The defender scored two almost identical headers from Jesse Lingard free-kicks to earn his side the victory, before receiving his second yellow of the match during his second goal celebration.

Nikola Zigic had earlier given the visitors the lead before Anthony Gerrard levelled matters on the half hour mark.

Sheffield Wednesday (A)

Adam Clayton and Martin Paterson produced on their return to the side with two clinical finishes to put Sheffield Wednesday to the sword.

Paterson’s first of the season – his 50th league goal – was created by Clayton, who worked space superbly before picking out the Northern Ireland international.

After missing a couple of good chances, Clayton put the contest to bed midway through the second half with a low finish to earn the Terriers a deserved victory.

Wednesday were poor in the first half, but improved when Jermaine Johnson was introduced who forced Alex Smithies into two smart saves with efforts from range. 

Connor Wickham scored a very late consolation, but Town held on to continue their impressive recent form at Hillsborough.

Burnley (H)

Town’s impressive recent form against Burnley continued with a 2-1 victory courtesy of goals from Oliver Norwood and James Vaughan.

Burnley-boy Oliver Norwood opened the scoring from range before James Vaughan netted from a controversially awarded penalty.

Danny Ings replied late on for the visitors, but it wasn’t enough as Town became only the third team this season to defeat the Clarets.
