2013/14 SEASON REVIEW: DECEMBER

12 June 2014

Town end the year well

Two wins, two defeats and two draws was Huddersfield Town’s record during December.

It began with Oliver Norwood sealing a brilliant one goal victory at Bolton Wanderers with a superb long range strike; however two defeats and two draws followed as Town’s inconsistent form continued.

The Terriers ended the year on a high though, with a 5-1 victory against Yeovil. Danny Ward caught the eye with a stunning strike from the right wing.

Check out images, match reports and video highlights from Town’s six matches.

Bolton Wanderers (A)
Tuesday 3 December 2013

Oliver Norwood settled a tense encounter at the Reebok with a stunning long range goal to earn the Terriers their first victory in Bolton in 45 years.

It was the midfielder’s second long range goal in a matter of days and earned Town a fully deserving three points.

‘keeper Alex Smithies had a huge hand in the victory, literally, with some fine saves in the first half to keep the Trotters at bay.

Ipswich Town (A)
Saturday 7 December 2013

After three straight wins, Town were denied a share of the spoils by an 89th minute goal from Ipswich striker Daryl Murphy.

Town led at the interval, with Danny Ward’s third of the season owing much to terrific work from Adam Hammill. However, they should have been further ahead – with skipper James Vaughan missing a penalty for the second time in successive seasons at Portman Road.

Ipswich fought back in the second-half, with David McGoldrick equalising early on and Murphy cruelly netting in the final minute of normal time.

Reading (H)
Saturday 14 December 2013

Reading’s killer instinct was evident at the John Smith’s Stadium this afternoon with the former Premier League side needing just one chance to put Town to the sword.

That chance fell to Billy Sharp, who found the back of the net courtesy of Pavel Pogrebnyak’s cross.

The Terriers general play was superb, but they lacked a finish in the final third. The returning Martin Paterson came the closest to a Town goal when he hit the post.

Brighton & Hove Albion
Saturday 21 December 2013

A determined performance from the Terriers earned their first ever point at the Amex.

The returning James Vaughan had Town’s best chance when he headed wide in the first half, while at the other end Ashley Barnes missed two good chances and had a header cleared off the line.

Town’s clean sheet is the first one an opposing team has kept in Brighton this season.

Derby County (H)
Thursday 26 December 2013

Martin Paterson netted with just four minutes of the game remaining to earn Town a point in a scintillating Boxing Day match against Derby County.

Paterson’s lofted effort, his first for Town on home soil, was just what the Terriers deserved having laid siege on the Rams’ goal for much of the second half.

Mark Robins’ men were second best in the first half and were lucky to go in at the interval just one goal behind. Craig Bryson had given the Rams the lead after Chris Martin had seen a penalty saved and before Joel Lynch had deflected a cross against the post.

Yeovil Town (H)
Sunday 29 December 2013

Town ended 2013 with a bang hitting Yeovil Town for five at the John Smith’s Stadium.

It didn’t start quite to plan for the Terriers though, who went behind when Ishmael Miller pounced on a loose ball.

Town were up and running in the 23rd minute courtesy of Adam Clayton and went in at half time two ahead thanks to Martin Paterson and Joel Lynch.

Ward bagged a second half brace with his first being of the highest quality, but his second will be one substitute ‘keeper Chris Dunn won’t want to remember.
