Stead hits brace and Paterson nets again

A brace from Jon Stead was enough to see off Mansfield Town’s Development Squad in Town’s first game in the new Final Third Development League Cup Competition.

A first-half goal from Martin Paterson gave Town an early lead after midfielder Phillip Billing and Paul Dixon linked up down the left flank, with Dixon delivering a teasing cross for Paterson to convert.

A solid first half performance throughout the starting line-up laid the foundations for the second half and all seemed to be going Town’s way when Jon Stead scored The Terriers second just after the hour mark.

However, Mansfield replied shortly after with a free-kick midway through the second half.

Nevertheless, Stead put the game out of reach for the visitors with his second goal of the game and increased the deficit to two goals shortly before the 80 minute mark.

Frankie Bunn’s side is back in action on Wednesday in the Premier League’s U21 Cup when Barnsley visits the John Smith’s Stadium in a 1pm kick-off. Admission to the game is priced at £4 adults and £2 concessions.

Town’s team (4-4-2):
