Carr & Tronstad net in pre-season win

A young Huddersfield Town Development Squad rounded off a successful pre-season campaign with a friendly win at local non-league side AFC Emley on Thursday evening.

Daniel Carr – the only Town player with First Team experience on the evening – opened the scoring just after the first minute through a penalty that he earned, with Norwegian teenager Sondre Tronstad netting in the second-half.

It could have been more for Town’s young side, who controlled possession pretty much throughout the tie, but a mixture of picking the wrong final pass and good goalkeeping kept the advantage down to two goals.

The young Terriers played 3-5-2 on the evening, just like their First Team colleagues have during the pre-season build-up, and won a penalty with their first attack when Carr’s quick feet drew a clumsy challenge from a defender. He picked himself up and dispatched the spot-kick, although the ball only just squeezed underneath ‘keeper Lawlor.

Trialist Jordan Hendrie, Joe Wilkinson and Flo Bojaj all missed decent chances to extend the lead in the first-half, whereas Emley’s best chance of the game came in the 22nd minute when former Town juniors Mikey Starkey and Steven Kenworthy combined, with the latter putting a header wide. Impressive ‘keeper Ed Wilczynski saw the ball wide on that occasion – and remained untroubled for the rest of the evening.

The second goal came 10 minutes into the second-half – and was well worth waiting for. A beautiful through-ball off the outside of Bojaj’s foot set his strike partner Carr away and when he passed to Tronstad, the diminutive midfielder coolly rolled the ball beyond the reach of the substitute goalie and inside the far post.

The subs started coming from Town late in the game and one, Academy striker Ronan Coughlan, almost added a superb third when he lifted the ball over a defender’s head and lobbed the goalkeeper – only for a defender to clear the ball off the line.

Town’s team (3-5-2):
Ed Wilczynski; William Boyle (c), Joe Wright, Joe Wilkinson; Jake Adelson (Jacob Hanson, 67), Ben Holmes, Ben Atkinson (Fraser Horsfall, 83), Sondre Tronstad (Danny Kane, 86), Jordan Hendrie; Flo Bojaj (Ronan Coughlan, 79), Daniel Carr

Unused sub:
Sam Guthrie
