COADY JOINS ‘THE YORKSHIRE CLUB’

6 August 2014

21 year-old Liverpool midfielder arrives in Town on 3 year deal

Huddersfield Town has today completed the signing of midfielder Conor Coady from Premier League giants Liverpool.

The 21 year-old, who has captained England up to Under-20 level, arrives at ‘The Yorkshire Club’ for an undisclosed fee on a three year contract, with the Club having an option on a fourth season.

The Club has fought off stiff Championship competition for Coady, who has completed pre-season with Brendan Rodgers’ First Team; his final game for the Reds being the 2-0 Champions Cup semi-final win over AC Milan in Charlotte, USA on 3 August in front of 70,000 fans.

He’s also played in Liverpool’s First Team pre-season friendlies against Roma, Brondby and Preston North End.

An aggressive and combative central midfield player, Coady joined Liverpool’s Academy as a 12 year-old. He progressed through the ranks at Anfield to become captain of their Under-21 side and appeared on the bench in the Premier League twice as a teenager in the 2010/11 season.

He eventually made his senior Liverpool debut in November 2012 in a Europa League game at Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala, with his Premier League debut soon following in a 3-1 win over Fulham at Craven Cottage in May 2013.

His progression at Liverpool was supplemented with the national side; Conor captained England U17s to a European Championship victory in Lichtenstein in 2010, where the Three Lions defeated Spain in the final.

Conor gained First Team experience during a season-long youth loan at League 1 Sheffield United in 2013/14, during which he made 50 appearances - scoring six goals. One of those appearances came at Wembley against Hull City in the semi-final of the FA Cup.

Huddersfield Town Manager Mark Robins today welcomed Coady to the Club:

“We’ve been looking at Conor’s development very closely for the last two years at Liverpool and then during his loan move to Sheffield United. We have been patient in waiting for the right opportunity to bring him to the Club, but sometimes that will take a long time - in some cases it may never happen. We are delighted that our work has now come to fruition.

“We know all about his qualities and we are delighted that we can welcome him to Huddersfield Town today.

“Conor will come in and make an immediate impact on our First Team, but at 21 years old he still has the capacity to improve further.

“Every reference – from Brendan Rodgers to Nigel Clough and throughout the Liverpool technical staff – paid testament to his professionalism and leadership qualities. On top of that, he has genuine versatility that allows him to be deployed in different midfield roles; he’s a combative, athletic, physical player but he can also push forward and become a goal threat; he got six for Sheffield United last season. He also adds height to our side, standing at over six feet tall.

“Unsurprisingly, there were a lot of clubs interested in Conor – some offering more money in transfer fee and wages – so we’re delighted he has chosen to further his career with us; I believe that’s testament to our philosophy, ambition and track record in dealing with players and operating the Club.”

Conor will wear the number 10 shirt at Huddersfield Town.
