TOWN’S TEAM PROGRESS IN GIRLS CUP

15 January 2014

Mirfield Free Grammar reaches Northern Final

Huddersfield Town’s representatives in the Football League U13 Girls Cup reached the North of England final yesterday after winning the area qualifier.

Each season The Football League organises two cup competitions for junior footballers from schools across the country - the Kids Cup and Girls Cup - with the finals being played in the build-up to some of the biggest matches of the domestic season.

The Football League Girls Cup comprises of a six-a-side competition for U13 girls that culminates in the Grand Final played before the Johnstone's Paint Trophy Final at Wembley in March 2014.

The road to the Girls Cup Final started at the beginning of September 2013, with Mirfield Free Grammar winning the opportunity to represent Town in the competition by winning the Huddersfield heat – defeating Honley High School in the half-time interval of the First Team win over Burnley on 30 November.

On Tuesday the team made its way to Barnsley’s Oakwell Stadium to play in the 10- team area qualifier. Mirfield finished top of their five team qualifying group after beating hosts Barnsley, Leeds United and Bradford City and drawing with Hartlepool United before going on to defeat Scunthorpe United in the semi-final and Middlesbrough 2-0 in the final!

Mirfield Free Grammar will now represent Huddersfield Town in the Northern Regional final in Leeds during February, with the winner of that event playing the Southern winners ahead of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy Final at Wembley towards the end of the season.

Although Town have not won the U13 Girls Cup, the Club has a proud history in the U11 Community Cup – with two overall winners in the last three seasons. In 2011, ahead of Town’s Play-Off Final against Peterborough United at Old Trafford, Meltham CE Primary won the League 1 contest after defeating Bristol Rovers in the final, whereas Honley Junior School won last season’s Championship competition.
