Hear from the Town legend
It’s been a while since my last Community Round-Up but like always it’s been a packed month and it’s a good time to reflect on what has been going on in our local area.
I’ve been visiting many schools so I’ll start with them. I went to Hepworth J & I School in Holmfirth on 9 September and delivered an assembly, during which I handed out free tickets to promote new Manager Chris Powell’s first home game against Middlesbrough.
Speaking of school visits, I was alongside Sean Scannell at Carr Green School and he was also helping to promote the game, and took pictures with young Town fans. Defender Mark Hudson and goalie Joe Murphy went to Christ Church Academy & St. Thomas’ Primary School and did an assembly there, which went down really well with the kids.
Netherhall Learning Campus had me busy too; I did five assemblies there in five days for all year groups! They were motivational speeches on dreams and aspirations for when leaving school, where I talked about my career. With a goal and a lot of hard work why can’t you achieve your potential?!
A new member of our School Partnership Scheme, Emley First School invited me to do an assembly, and current Club partners 10th Holme Valley (New Mill) Scout Group had a tour of the John Smith’s Stadium.
Remember: If anyone reading this is involved at a school or junior sports club – not just football but any sport – I’d urge you to have a look at how our partnership can benefit you. On top of player visits and the special plaque, you also get the chance earn cashback on tickets you sell to our games, which you can use to buy vital equipment. I know how scarce money is at amateur level and this really could help.

We visited Lowerhouses School Breakfast Club with Joel Lynch and Sean Scannell who took part in a match. The kids loved meeting the players and getting to play alongside them in a game!
There has also been a 1908 Rewards winner! Steve Turner had a day to remember with a tour of PPG Canalside and lunch with myself. Steve won as part of the 1908 Rewards scheme, where a draw takes place at every home league game to reward fans.
At the recent Charity Signing Day, Kirklees Charity MENCAP Group attended and their members had the opportunity to get their merchandise signed. Other attendees got merchandised signed for a upcoming Charity Ball that they are holding in aid of Operation Smile and Kirkwood Hospice.
