Holmes nets in narrow home defeat

Town: Duane Holmes (26)

Town’s Under-18 side went ahead against visitors Leicester City at Canalside in the latest Under-18 Professional Development League 2 game of the season, but fell to defeat thanks to two second half goals from the visitors.

Playing in wet conditions the visitors started the game well and the Terriers had their backs to the wall in the opening 10 minutes, but Town fought back strongly. First a cross from left back Thomas Briggs narrowly evaded winger George Conway in the penalty area before young striker Rekeil Pyke tested the opposition goalkeeper with a powerful effort.

Top scorer Duane Holmes went close in the 22nd minute, firing over after rolling a defender, but he made no mistakes four minutes later. A corner was played back to the midfielder on the edge of the box and he struck the ball cleanly into the top corner for his 12th of the season in just 19 appearances.

Town had a big chance to extend their lead in the 48th minute from another corner when Jake Charles found the head of Paul Mullin, but the striker diverted his effort over the crossbar. Charles saw his left footed shot deflected over the crossbar five minutes later before fellow winger Conway fared similarly.

Sadly, despite that pressure, the visitors equalised through a great passage of play in the 62nd minute. Spurred on, they scored the eventual winner just six minutes later.

Town’s best chance of an equaliser fell to centre back Will Boyle with 10 minutes left, but the cross was just too far ahead of him.

Town’s team (4-4-1-1):
Ed Wilczynski; Thomas Briggs, William Boyle, Joe Wilkinson, Kedesh Goddard (c); George Conway (Regan Booty 71), Danny Morton, Duane Holmes, Jake Charles; Paul Mullin; Rekeil Pyke (Ben Atkinson 81)
