Youth team record superb away win
Town took the lead on the quarter hour mark through a throw-in; the ball landed on the head of striker Cox and his effort hit the post, but Town reacted well and centre back William Boyle span neatly before firing the ball into the bottom corner.
Leicester were a strong opponent and hit back hard after conceding in windy conditions, but the young Terriers weathered the storm and went in one goal to the good at the interval.
The second Town goal was one of the most impressive of the season so far – a counter attack that took just 14 seconds to complete after the ball left the hands of goalkeeper Ed Wilczynski. Town’ trialist right back – a youngster from Liverpool – played the ball into midfield where the diminutive Danny Morton gained possession and played a superb through ball into the path of striker Cox, who made no mistake in making it 2-0.
The third soon followed through his strike partner Paul Mullin; great work from midfielder Duane Holmes setup the chance, with his turn and cutback being converted by the forward as he slid in at close range.
Town completed their scoring with a second from striker Cox, with more good work from Morton in the build-up; he squared the ball across the face of goal for his colleague to tap in.
Leicester scored a late consolation with a minute of the game remaining, but that didn’t detract from a great afternoon according to Academy Manager Mark Lillis:
“It’s great to go to Leicester and record the win; we played the conditions very well.
“Leicester get the ball forward quickly, but our lads dealt with it well after really having to dig in for the first quarter of an hour. The first goal settled us down and we put in a very impressive performance during the second half, passing the ball well. We’re instilling a winning mentality at the Academy.
“It’s been a good fortnight for the lads – they have bounced back from the defeat at Leeds very well with successive wins against Barnsley and Leicester. I was on a coaching course on the day of the Barnsley game, but I’ve watched the video back and I’m particularly proud of the discipline the lads showed at the end of the game as Barnsley had three players sent off.”
