Lillis’ men win second straight game

Town’s under-18 side have now won their opening two games of the season after a comprehensive 3-0 victory over visitors Birmingham City at Canalside Sports Complex in the FA Premier Academy League this morning.

The Terriers started well and midfielder Kedesh Goddard fired just wide early on, but Town did take the lead through a brilliant free kick from Jake Charles before the quarter hour mark.

Not long after Duane Holmes looked to have extended the lead with a brilliant shot, but the Assistant Referee denied the midfielder with an offside flag.

Town had a lot of possession in the Birmingham half throughout the first 45 minutes and trialist Paul Mullin went close to scoring Town’s second twice; shooting just wide before hitting the crossbar with a very powerful header.

The second half began in heavy rain, but it didn’t stop the Terriers. Second year midfielder Duane Holmes made no mistake with his second opportunity to make it 2-0 just after the restart, rounding the ‘keeper and easily placing the ball into the empty goal.

Just after the hour mark a long throw from right back Tom Briggs was flicked on and headed towards goal by midfielder George Conway, but unfortunately the ball arrowed straight at the visiting goalkeeper.

Birmingham had their best effort late on when their winger struck the crossbar with a long range effort, but Town’s left back Michael Starkey scored a stunning goal in added time - curling his left footed free kick past the outstretched City goalkeeper.

Town’s team (4-3-3):
Ed Wilczynski; Michael Starkey, William Boyle, Joe Wright, Tom Briggs; Ben Holmes, Kedesh Goddard, Duane Holmes; Jake Charles (Ryan Cox 80), Paul Mullin (Sean Collins 72), George Conway
