Huddersfield Town’s Under 23s was cruelly beaten 2-1 against Sheffield United in the Professional Development League at the Look Local Stadium on Monday afternoon.

Town’s young side, that included none of the permitted overage players, started the game on the back foot as the hosts came close to an opener within the opening 10 minutes of the game; Sheffield United striker, Marc McNulty, had an opportunity which fizzled wide of Luke Coddington’s goal.

The Terriers began to find their feet as the match went on and enjoyed a good spell of possession, forcing Blades ‘keeper, Aaron Ramsdale, into a number of saves.

Sheffield United had the ball in the back of the net on the stroke of half-time, but it was rightly ruled out due to a foul in the build-up.

Ten minutes in to the second half and the ball was in the back of the net once again, this time for Huddersfield as Jack Boyle fired home. Unfortunately for the Terriers and the youngster’s top scorer, it was also disallowed, this time for offside.

Sheffield United came close from a free-kick after the hour mark, but Huddersfield’s composed defence remained calm to clear their lines.

With 20 minutes left Huddersfield Town was ahead. A corner was delivered in to the box which was met by Lewis O’Brien who took the ball down and finished superbly.

Pressure began to rise for Frankie Bunn’s Under 23s and within 10 minutes of taking the lead, the hosts were level. David Brooks levelling the score for Sheffield United.

In the 87th minute, Sheffield United scored their second; the goal secured all three points for the home side. McNulty finding himself a yard of space in the area and unleashed a shot to score past Coddington.

Next up for Huddersfield Town’s Under 23s is a home fixture against Barnsley on Sunday 15 January at the John Smith’s Stadium.
