REPORT: WEST BROM 0-1 TOWN UNDER-23s

24 January 2017

Highlights to appear on HTTV this week

- Town U23s beat West Brom 1-0
- Sam Warde scores his second goal of the season
- Frankie Bunn's side sits second in Premier League Cup group

A superb second half strike from Sam Warde gave Huddersfield Town’s Under-23s a valuable win over West Brom in the U23 Premier League Cup on Tuesday evening.

Huddersfield Town’s Under-23s made a good start to the match at Aggborough, Kidderminster, unsettling the Club’s Premier League 2 opponents early on with the use of its high pressing game.

Despite the pace and power of the home side, it was Frankie Bunn’s youngsters who had the first meaningful chance. Dom Tear was played through the defence by Under-23s Captain Regan Booty, but put his effort wide from the edge of the area.

It was a hard fought first half with little between the two sides with West Brom’s best chance falling to Andre Wright. The striker put his effort high and wide of Luke Coddington’s goal.

Two more chances fell Town’s way before the half-time whistle, Jack Boyle put a curling effort wide from the edge of the area before Lewis O’Brien put a good opportunity over the bar.

The young Terriers started the second half excellently and were ahead within a minute. Sam Warde hit a stunning 25 yard strike past the Baggies ‘keeper Jack Rose to give Frankie Bunn’s side the lead; his second goal of the season.

Town continued to create opportunities; Tear hit a great strike from range just over the bar before Warde tried his luck again, this time putting his shot just wide after a great piece of build-up play.

17 year-old winger Jonathan Leko, who has made 11 appearances for West Brom’s First Team, was excellently defended against by both Jacob Hanson and Jordan Williams all evening to limit to hosts chances.

In the 79th minute, Town had the ball in the back of the net. Dom Tear, who was a constant threat down the left hand side, slotted the ball past Rose but his goal was ruled out for offside.

In the dying moments of the match the home side pressed Town back to find an equaliser, but the young defence held firm earning Bunn’s side all three points.

That win now means Huddersfield Town’s Under-23s have moved into second place in Group G of the U23 Premier League Cup behind leaders Liverpool FC. Town is two points clear of third with two games remaining; the top two in the group qualify for the last 16.
