Defender commits his future to the Terriers

- Defender extends his stay until 2019
- Reaction from Head Coach David Wagner

Huddersfield Town defender Tommy Smith has today signed a contract extension that will keep him at the Club until the summer of 2019.

The 24 year-old right back’s existing contract was due to run until 2018, with this new deal running for a further 12 months.

The Club also has the option at that point to extend the contract out into the 2019/20 season.

Smith, who hails from Warrington, started his career in the Tranmere Rovers youth system before making the move to Manchester City in 2003. He turned professional there and featured for the Club’s Elite Development Squad, but didn’t make a senior appearance for City.

He subsequently joined the Terriers in August 2012 as part of the Club’s newly formed Under-21 squad, competing in the Premier League’s Professional Development League 2. He made 20 starts at for the Under-21s at a mixture of centre back and right back in Town’s debut season and appeared among the First Team substitutes in the January 2013 FA Cup win at Charlton Athletic.

He eventually made his league debut as a starter in the 2-1 Yorkshire derby win at Sheffield Wednesday live on Sky TV in November 2013; a season that ended with him making 26 starts.

Since then Tommy has been a virtual ever in the side; in total he has made 108 starts for the Club, with a further five substitute appearances, scoring once.

Huddersfield Town’s Head Coach David Wagner explained:

“I’m very happy that Tommy has extended his stay at Huddersfield Town for even longer, as he is an important player for this Club.

“He is another player who shows the ‘Terriers Identity’ on the pitch in every game and he deserves this contract from us.

“He has worked very hard to improve his game since I arrived at the Club back in November and he still has further room for development. That is exciting for everyone, as I already believe he is a top right back for this division.

“Tommy’s character is excellent and I know he will keep working hard on the training pitch to get better and better.

“Signing up Tommy reaffirms our commitment to keeping the best players at the Club, following on from Jonathan Hogg, Philip Billing, Joe Lolley and Harry Bunn all signing new contracts too. This has always been big for us.”
