Bunn & Payne secure fourth straight win

- Terriers win fourth straight pre-season friendly
- Bunn & Payne score at Oldham Athletic
- Pre-season sponsored by Hirsche Automotive

There were yet more pre-season minutes for Town’s entire fit First Team squad in the fourth pre-season friendly win of the campaign at Oldham Athletic on Saturday.

The players who played half an hour against Rochdale behind-closed-doors in the week got an hour’s work under their belts, with only Mark Hudson (leg), Nahki Wells (knee), Ivan Paurević (illness) and new boy Kasey Palmer (hip) not involved.

As has been the case all pre-season, David Wagner’s side dominated possession – but it took until the 72nd minute to break the deadlock.

That came with a slick move down the right side, where the hard-working Elias Kachunga found 16 year-old right back Jordan Williams’ overlapping run and the England youth international played a perfect low ball into the area for Harry Bunn to sweep past the ‘keeper.

The second came in the final minute of the game when Dean Whitehead played a smart one-two with Kachunga before sending a cross onto the head of Jack Payne, who smashed home from close range.

In the first half it was Australian international Aaron Mooy who caught the eye with some superb passing from the central midfield two and whilst 18 year-old striker Rekeil Pyke held the ball up well, the Terriers were thwarted when the chances came their way.

Pyke should have scored in the ninth minute when Sean Scannell forced the ‘keeper into an error and Kyle Dempsey found him unmarked in the area, but his errant first touch allowed the custodian to recover and smother the shot.

Home centre back Stott blocked another Pyke effort soon after as Town kept pressing, whilst at the other end Oldham rarely threatened. Joel Coleman – on his return to Oldham – only had to deal with the odd set piece, turning one decent effort from Josh Law over the bar in the 23rd minute.

Jon Gorenc Stanković, on his first public run-out, was noticeably calm in possession on several occasions as the Terriers insisted on playing out from the back on all occasions.

Former Town loanee Lee Croft tested Coleman moments after the second 45 began with a low drive that was comfortably saved, but Philip Billing returned the favour soon after with a long range drive that the ‘keeper palmed away.

Stanković got his head to the resulting Mooy corner, but the goalie did just enough to tip the ball over the crossbar.

Then came the goals, as Bunn and Payne gave the Terriers another pre-season win to keep the momentum going.
