Huddersfield Town Head Coach David Wagner was unhappy with his side’s first half performance following the 2-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest in the Sky Bet Championship.

Wagner explained to htafc.com that his side was unable to adapt to Nottingham Forest’s different system quickly enough.

“We were poor in the first half. We were surprised about their setup and we were not able to handle it in the first half.

“At half-time we tried to find solutions against them and I thought the second half was better, but far away from our best.

“At the end we deserved the defeat because of our first half performance; we weren’t good enough today.”

At half-time Huddersfield Town switched to a 3-5-2 formation to deal with Nottingham Forest’s system, however, Town’s Head Coach explained that despite a better showing in the second half, his side gave themselves too much to do.

“We weren’t able to make the right decisions in the defence; Nottingham overloaded the midfield and were not able to catch them and close the gaps.

“During the game it wasn’t possible to change our formation, but even after half-time when we changed it, we did it better, we had our opportunities but then we made a mistake, which led to the second goal; then the game was very difficult and it gave us a mountain to climb.

“Once we changed the system we were better and performed better in the second half, but our first half performance wasn’t good enough.”

Following the defeat, Wagner held his hands up for way his team approached the match but also explained his players had to do the same for their individual performances.

“My players know they weren’t good enough today. The players have to raise their hands and say they made mistakes with the ball in the first half and a little bit in the second half.

“From the setup and the tactical point of view I have to raise my hands; with our setup, we couldn’t compete.

“We have to accept this result and move forwards as we have six, hopefully more than six, really important games in front of us. We have to be focused on this!”

The defeat leaves Huddersfield Town in third place in the Sky Bet Championship, eight points ahead of 7th placed Sheffield Wednesday.

“We and a few other teams are playing for the Play-Offs, this isn’t a secret and we’ve been doing it for the last three months.

“Today we didn’t perform and this was the biggest problem. We have to perform better, my players are humans, these performances shouldn’t happen but they do.

“We have to make sure we perform well and collect points; the race for the Play-Off places is still underway and we are prepared.

“We will do everything to occupy one of these Play-Off places at the end of the season, but for this we have to play better than we did today.”
