Huddersfield Town’s Under-23 side was soundly defeated by Liverpool FC in the latest Premier League Cup game of the season on Sunday afternoon.

In rainy conditions at the Tameside Stadium, home of Curzon Ashton, the visitors were five goals ahead inside 50 minutes, but a second-half brace from Under-18 scholar Olly Dyson made the score line more respectable for Frankie Bunn’s team.

The win sealed Liverpool FC’s spot at the top of the Group G table with one game to play, with Town still able to qualify for the next stage as the second placed team ahead of West Brom and Ipswich Town. That fate will be sealed by the result of West Brom’s next two games, as well as Town’s home fixture with the Tractor Boys later this month.

Town’s side on the afternoon included no overage players, but did feature a second start for trialist striker Frank Mulhern, formerly of Leeds United.

Liverpool’s team was young too, but several players had Premier League experience including Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joe Gomez, Sheyi Ojo and Ben Woodburn

Town ‘keeper Luke Coddington was required early on to deny former Wolves loanee Ojo, but Liverpool did soon take the lead inside 15 minutes, with Harry Wilson playing Woodburn in down the left; he lifted the ball over the goalie.

Mulhern fired wide at the other end before Denilson Carvalho forced the visiting ‘keeper into his first save, but Liverpool FC doubled the advantage soon after; Woodburn drifting past three defenders before finding teammate Virtue, who backheeled home.

Town’s Irish midfielder Sam Warde had a goal ruled out for offside afterwards before a Liverpool brace before half-time killed the game. First Wilson netted in the 42nd minute after more good Woodburn work and then, three minutes later, Ojo expertly headed home Alexander-Arnold’s cross from the right.

It was five in the 52nd minute when Wilson netted his 24th goal of the season, sending a looping header home from Virtue’s looping ball into the box.

Then followed Town’s best spell of the game, with attacker Dyson netting twice. His first came through a superb solo run down the right in the 55th minute and the next followed 20 minutes later when he finished from the edge of the box after a poor Liverpool clearance.

Town fell to 10 men minutes later when Jamie Spencer, playing left back, was shown a straight red following an altercation with Alexander-Arnold.

Things got worse late on when Dyson was forced off with injury after all substitutions had been made, allowing Woodburn to net his second and Liverpool’s sixth in the final moments.

Highlights of the game will appear on HTTV this week.
