REPORT: COVENTRY 2-0 TOWN U23s

19 September 2016

First defeat in four for the Development Squad

- Town U23s lose at Coventry City
- George Thomas scores both goals for the home side
- Highlights on HTTV later this week

A run of three straight wins for Frankie Bunn’s Town’s Under-23 side came to an end at the hands of Coventry City in the Professional Development League on Monday afternoon.

An early second-half brace from striker George Thomas gave the Sky Blues the win at the Ricoh Arena.

Like the hosts, the Terriers fielded a pure Under-23 side, with no overage players involved on the afternoon.

Bunn welcomed back central defender Dylan Cogill from injury to make his first competitive start of the season, whilst former Liverpool FC player Alex O’Hanlon played as a trialist at left back.

However, Frankie was without the services of defenders Danny Kane and Jordan Williams; midfielder Jamie Spencer and attacker Ronan Coughlan through injury.

Coventry had the better of the chances in a goalless first half, with Town ‘keeper Luke Coddington forced into a save after just four minutes before a Sky Blues trialist twice headed over the bar when well positioned.

Town’s first sniff at goal came inside 25 minutes when striker Rekeil Pyke fired wide after making room for a shot.

After no goals in the opening 45, the home side secured the win with two quick-fire second-half strikes from striker Thomas. He side-footed Whitmore’s squad ball home in the 48th minute after a great cross-field pass from Cian Harries before making it two barely three minutes later; Coventry punishing Town for an error in possession.

Right back Jacob Hanson went as close as anyone to breaking Town’s duck in the 56th minute, shooting just wide after good work from substitute Dom Tear.

Thomas spurned a good chance for his hat-trick in the 66th minute, missing the target, before Coddington made further saves from striker Jack McBean and Kyle Spencer.

Highlights of the game will appear on HTTV later this week.
