LOAN: ‘KEEPER JOE MURPHY JOINS BURY

30 January 2017

Loan moves brings an end to goalkeeper’s time at HTAFC

- Goalkeeper Joe Murphy joins Bury on loan
- Move effectively ends 'keeper's time at HTAFC
- Comments from Head Coach David Wagner

Huddersfield Town goalkeeper Joe Murphy has today joined Sky Bet League 1 club Bury on a Standard Loan until 31 May 2017 inclusive.

The experienced custodian, who recently returned to training following a hand injury, will spend the rest of the season with the Shakers, effectively bringing an end to his time at Huddersfield Town.

The 35 year-old Republic of Ireland international joined the Club in 2014 as a free agent and has made 14 starts for the Club across two and a half seasons, but has made no senior appearances during 2016/17.

Bury, led by Head Coach Chris Brass, currently sits 21st in the Sky Bet League 1 table – the final relegation space – with 27 points from 29 games following a 3-3 home draw against Walsall at the weekend.

There are several familiar players already in Bury’s squad; defender Antony Kay is the team captain and former Town Player of the Year James Vaughan is the top scorer, whilst Neil Danns, Ishmael Miller and Paul Rachubka are also on the books at Gigg Lane.

Murphy is expected to be available for the Shakers’ next game; a Sky Bet League 1 fixture at Shrewsbury Town on Saturday.

Huddersfield Town Head Coach David Wagner explained:

“Joe has been a great professional in training, where he has been a very good influence on our young goalkeepers. He has also been very unlucky with injuries, getting several problems through no fault of his own.

“We have talked about his future and he knows that he will not be offered a new contract here when his current one expires in the summer, so he understandably wants to go and play senior games for the rest of the season to find a new club.

“I am happy with our goalkeeping situation, with Danny Ward and Joel Coleman both strong contenders for the shirt, so we could do the right thing by Joe and let him join Bury.

“Every member of staff and player in the squad wishes Joe all the best for the future.”
