PREVIEW: BRISTOL CITY (A)

12 April 2024

A comprehensive look at Saturday's Sky Bet Championship fixture against Bristol City at Ashton Gate

- Preview ahead of Saturday's fixture

Making the trip south to Ashton Gate this weekend, Huddersfield Town will be hoping to take all three points back to West Yorkshire as they face Bristol City in the Sky Bet Championship.

Following Tuesday's fixture against Preston North End, André Breitenreiter's Terriers will be keen to secure a much-needed win as they take on the Robins on Saturday.

THE OPPOSITION

Sitting comfortably in mid-table for the majority of the 2023/24 season, Bristol City started their current campaign under former Manager Nigel Pearson - however, after five defeats from seven, the Robins dismissed Pearson after two-and-a-half-years with the Club.

Finishing in 14th position last season, the 2023/24 campaign is taking similar shape - with neither a promotion push or relegation battle in sight for Bristol City.

THEIR MANAGER

Liam Manning 16x9.jpgInitially working as an Academy Coach at Ipswich Town, Liam Manning was appointed Head Coach of West Ham United's U23s, before later being named Head Coach of Belgian First Division B Club Lommel SK in 2020.

One year later, the former midfielder joined League One side MK Dons, where he was named EFL League One Manager of the Month after just eleven games in charge - a feat he achieved again just four months later in January 2022.

Missing out on automatic promotion by a single point at the end of his first season, before losing out to Wycombe Wanderers during their semi-final legs, Manning was dismissed at the end of 2022 following a poor start to his second campaign with the Club.

Making the move to Oxford United in March 2023, his stint with the U's was short but sweet, as the Club sat second in League One upon his departure.

Appointed Head Coach of Bristol City in November 2023, Manning has so far seen his side record 16 wins this season to sit 12th in the Sky Bet Championship table.

LAST TIME OUT

It was a heavy defeat for Blackburn Rovers at Ashton Gate on Wednesday evening, as the Robins put five past the visitors to win comfortably on home soil.

With goals from Tommy Conway, Anis Mehmeti, and former Terrier Nahki Wells, Bristol City claimed all three points with conviction - especially as the side boasted just 45% possession throughout the game.

Previous Starting XI (3-4-2-1): O'Leary; Tanner, Vyner, Roberts; McCrorie, Williams, Knight, Pring; Sykes, Twine; Conway

FORMATION

Mostly switching between a 4-2-3-1 and 3-4-2-1 formation, the Robins often differ between structures to suit the needs of the game, whilst building around a strong, defensive midfield.

Organised in a 3-4-2-1 for three of their last four fixtures, Bristol City have won all three of these - most notably against former Premier League side Leicester City at the end of March.

WHO TO WATCH

Nahki Wells

Nahki Wells 16x9.jpg

No stranger to Town fans, Nahki Wells has made a name for himself at Ashton Gate too - finding the back of the net six times in 31 appearances for the Robins so far this season.

Often making an appearance later in the game - and following an injury at the end of last year which saw him sidelined for a number of months - the centre-forward has added three goals to his tally in his last three appearances.

Tommy Conway

Tommy Conway 16x9.jpg

Coming back from a hamstring injury in September 2023, the 21-year-old has since been eager to make up for lost time - scoring nine times since his return, including twice in Wednesday's fixture.

A product of the Bristol City Academy, Conway made his professional debut in April 2021, scoring his first professional goal a month later, and going on to be named the EFL Young Player of the Month in August 2022.

Harry Cornick

Joining from Luton Town in January 2023, the pacey forward is one of Bristol City's go-to impact substitutions, having only started 17% of their league games to date.

Scoring twice and assiting once in such few minutes, the 29-year-old boasts experience that allows him to stretch the game and get in behind tired defences.
