More on Town’s second opponent in Germany

- Terriers to take on SV Darmstadt 98 in Germany
- Darmstadt compete in Germany’s second division
- The German side are managed by Dirk Schuster

David Wagner’s Huddersfield Town will face SV Darmstadt 98 on Sunday 22 July at the Merck-Stadion am Böllenfalltor in Germany.

The 2. Bundesliga side finished 10th in Germany’s second division last season with midfielder Tobias Kempe finishing as the club’s top goalscorer with 11 league goals.

Last season was Darmstadt’s 120th professional football season and its first since relegation to Germany’s second tier in 2017.

Darmstadt’s manager Dirk Schuster was brought in for his second spell with the German side in December of last season.

Schuster had previously enjoyed a four year spell in charge of the club between 2012 and 2016, during which time he helped the side to back-to-back promotions to the Bundesliga after a 33 year absence from Germany’s top flight.

Darmstadt have won Germany’s second tier of football on three occasions but have not been crowned league champions since 1981. They did however finish runners-up during the 2014/15 season.

Town’s Head Coach David Wagner made 72 appearances for Darmstadt during his career scoring 21 goals for the German side.

This pre-season is the first time that Town and Darmstadt will go head-to-head in both clubs’ histories.
