Town claimed a valuable three points this afternoon against a battling Bristol Rovers outfit to move into the automatic promotion places.

Jordan Rhodes scored the winner for Town in the 5th minute of the game with an excellent half-volley from 20 yards out. The striker then missed a penalty at the start of the second half but thankfully for Town his miss was irrelevant as they held on to record back to back victories.

Lee Clark was forced to change his team minutes before kick-off when Gary Roberts dropped out of the squad with an illness. Clark changed his formation back to 4-4-2 with Jordan Rhodes replacing the winger and therefore partnering Benik Afobe in attack. In midfield Scott Arfield went out onto the left and Cadamarteri to the right, leaving Kilbane and Gudjonsson to form a central duo.

Town started the game in their change strip of red and black stripes - kicking from left to right.

The game started in a scrappy fashion with neither side managing to get the ball down and string a succession of passes together.

GOAL - Town opened the scoring in the 5th minute courtesy of Jordan Rhodes - stunning the raucous home crowd. A hopeful long ball from the back by Town was well won by Benik Afobe who neatly headed the ball down to Rhodes 18 yards out. The striker - who had recently penned a two year extension to his contract - hit the ball instantly on the half volley with his weaker left foot beating the despairing dive of Conrad Logan in the Gas' goal to score his 18th goal of the season.

The Gas responded well to going behind forcing Alex Smithies into his first save of the game in the 8th minute. A neat piece of passing by the Gas found their left-winger, Jeff Hughes in space 25 yards out. Hughes turned sharply and fired a good effort at Town's goal which had Smithies stretching to tip it round the past. The resulting corner was well defended by Town who cleared the ball to safety.

Town should have doubled their lead in the 12th minute but Rhodes somehow failed to miss when it appeared easier to score. Joey Gudjonsson rattled the Gas's post from 25 yards out with a superb effort, with the rebounding falling to Town's goalscorer Rhodes. Although the ball was bouncing and it was on his weaker foot you would have expected the striker to have finished from eight yards, however, his effort went narrowly over Logan's goal.

Following Rhodes' effort the game settled down - with Town dominating possession without causing any real goal threat.

Gavin Williams went close for the Gas in the 27th minute - his 25 yard speculative effort went only a couple of yards over Smithies goal.

BOOKING - Town received the first caution of the game when Kevin Kilbane was booked in the 31st minute for a late tackle on Gavin Williams.

BOOKING - The Gas received their first booking in the 38th minute when Chris Lines brought down Scott Arfield as he tried to start a Town break-away.

Rovers created their best chance of the half in its closing stages. After a good period of possession the Gas won a corner down Town's left. The delivery was good and flicked on well at the front post to find centre back Danny Coles all alone at the back stick. The defender had to react quickly and failed to test Smithies as his effort from 5 yards went wide of the 'keeper's goal.

The Gas continued their impressive end to the half and tried again to beat Smithies from long range when Will Hoskins bundled past Stephen Jordan and fired a shot from the edge of the area which ended up with the Town fans behind the 'keeper's goal.

Town returned to the pitch in what had become a very blustery day down in Bristol.

The Terriers started the half on the front foot with Scott Arfield looking lively as a make shift left midfielder.

SUB - The Gas made their first change of the half in the 49th minute replacing Gavin Williams with Jo Kuffour. Stuart Campbell's substitution indicated a change in formation with Kuffour linking up with Hoskins in attack as Rovers reverted to 4-4-2.

Town missed a glorious chance to double their lead when referee Malone awarded Town a penalty in the 54th minute after Coles handled the ball. Jordan Rhodes shouldered the responsibility but was thwarted by the legs of Logan who made a good save to keep the score at 1-0.

BOOKING - Town received their second booking of the game in the 59th minute when winger Danny Cadamarteri was shown a yellow for a late tackle on Hughes.

SUB - Lee Clark made his first change of the half in the 64th minute replacing Danny Cadamarteri with Aidan Chippendale who made his debut for the Terriers. Clark's switch saw Arfield go onto the right wing and Chippendale onto the left.

Rovers had their first effort of the second half in the 62nd minute when full-back Danny Senda cut in from the right and fired a wayward shot wide of Smithies goal.

SUB - In the 68th minute Clark made his second change replacing goalscorer Jordan Rhodes with Lee Novak.

SUB - Campbell also made a change replacing winger Harry Pell with Charlie Reece.

Scott Arfield tried his luck from range in the 73rd minute; however, his speculative effort didn't worry Logan in the Gas' goal.

In the 75th minute Senda had his second effort on Town's goal; this time the full-back found the target but failed to beat Smithies who smothered the shot well.

SUB - The Terriers made their final change of the afternoon in the 79th minute when Alan Lee replaced Benik Afobe - who had played well without much reward.

Brilliant link up play between Town's new strike partnership of Novak and Lee created an opportunity for Arfield. Lee's flick-on found Novak who protected the ball well with his back to goal, the striker then saw the clever run of Arfield and found him with a back heel 8 yards out. Arfield hit the ball instantly but never got over the shot and saw it go high over Logan's goal.

The Gas thought they had equalised in the 83rd minute when Smithies failed to collect a long ball and fumbled into his goal. However, as the Rover's players turned away to celebrate the referee blew for a foul on Town's 'keeper and the goal was chalked off.

SUB - Rover's made their final change of the game in the 85th minute when player/manager Stuart Campbell replaced himself with Elliot Richards.

Town were having to weather some heavy pressure from the home side and conceded a free-kick 20 yards out in the 88th minute. Lines stood over the ball and curled it narrowly over Smithies goal.

Town escaped again in the first minute of injury time when Hoskins had a goal ruled out for offside. Kuffour's cross from the right was met perfectly by Lines who produced a superb save from Smithies; the rebound fell to Hoskins who put the ball away but was deemed offside by the linesman.
